Ohase

The 'oHase' project is a new step in the development of the Hasselt canal zone and transforms a rough piece of town into a pleasant residential area. The intervention forms a natural extension of the inner city and provides a varied type mix of 78 new housing units and flats. The dwellings are quietly located, in a car-free and bicycle-friendly environment where water and parks create the open space. Central to the project is a square, where residents can meet each other and which gives shape to the strong community feeling. The open space, the water, the car-free character and a strong sense of community make the place feel like 'a village in a city'. It combines the advantages of living in a village with the urban advantages of accessibility, proximity to services and experience.

Throughout the project, three atmospheres are revealed that are jointly connected in one spatial story. The living experiences accommodate different family compositions and lifestyles and aim for a varied mix of housing. Eight landbased homes with a view of the water are located right on the canal. These homes are characterised by their southern orientation and an abundance of daylight. The bedroom and bathroom are placed on the ground floor, enabling lifelong living at this unique location. Forty-five water-oriented park flats are located in the heart of the site, supplemented by several penthouses. Facing this are twelve park residences, located in the park of the site. These dwellings are related to a crèche and a playground that give the project a child-friendly character. Despite the different typologies and living experiences, a coherent whole is still created. This is mainly achieved through the use of materials, high-quality detailing and a well thought-out garden concept that links the volumes together from the unbuilt space.
